Conversation Series 152 – Patrick Restacks for Truth

The guest for this 152nd conversation on race is Patrick, one of my wonderful paid subscribers from Substack. Patrick and I have been chatting for about one month now. He is a 46-year-old racialized white male who didn’t have many deep conversations on race growing up despite living in a diverse liberal town. He mentioned that he was always fearful of saying the wrong thing, so the conversations never materialized. I’m so grateful that Patrick has trusted me enough to have this conversation with me publicly for your viewing pleasure!

It won’t be easy. Patrick is a very empathetic man who has struggled with mental health throughout his life. White supremacist mythology can sometimes manifest in a very similar way to mental illness, so it’s a huge complication. Reflecting on his racialization has been “challenging and destabilizing” for Patrick, but he has come to some revelations that he’ll share with us if we’re lucky.
