Each of our three panelists will have 15 minutes to discuss their perspective on the intersection of race and technology based on their professional experiences working in tech.\n\nNext\, the audience will have the remaining 1 hour plus to ask questions directly of our panelists. This event is perfect for those seeking careers in tech or those who want an insider perspective on race within the technology context.\n\n\nMeet our panelists! \n\n\nIan is a seasoned Senior Site Reliability Engineer at Pear Deck where he makes sure that teachers can teach their lessons successfully on the platform without anyone noticing any issues. He’s worked at places such as Amazon\, Disney\, CLEAR\, and all kinds of startups and medium sized companies across a variety of industries.\n\nIan is originally from Seattle\, WA\, but has been living in NYC for the past five years. He likes chatting about leftist politics\, playing video games\, going to concerts (in the Before Time)\, and exploring NYC via his stomach.\n\n\n\nScott began writing software professionally in 1996\, mostly for government consulting firms and mostly using the Windows (later .NET) tech stack.  The past 4-5 years have provided opportunities for him to delve into cloud computing (primarily AWS\, but a bit of Azure too)\, machine learning\, Java\, Scala\, and Python (among other languages). IHe entered the tech industry via an undergraduate degree in computer science from the University of Maryland.  An MBA from the same university enabled his transition into project management and tech lead roles.\nProfessional extracurricular activities include attending tech meetups\, bootcamps\, and conferences both in his local area and elsewhere (very occasionally to speak or present).  He’s spoken to computer science undergraduates about the IT industry and taught courses in computer skills to senior citizens as a volunteer.  Beyond work (when he’s not busy wrangling 5-year-old twins)\, he enjoys travel\, photography\, reading\, playing video games badly (scottlaw1 on Xbox)\, and listening to music.Daria is a female PoC software engineer (“full stack”) that’s been in this SaSS web app industry for ~8 years now. She got into the tech world the ‘traditional’ way of getting a Computer Science degree through college\, but less traditional in that she thought changing text color in html was l33t coding until her 3rd year at college (when I switched into CS). She is very passionate about representation in the CS industry\, the lack of “soft skills” in most mid-tier/senior roles\, the consequences of implicit bias (and how to combat them)\, and humans/people over corporations/processes.
