I’m thrilled to introduce the next guest on The Contraband Wagon who will be joining me for a 2-hour conversation on race\, William Spivey (our hundred-and-thirty-third Conversation Series event). \nWilliam is a writer on Medium (https://williamspivey.medium.com/) and Substack (https://substack.com/@williamspivey1) who I was connected to via our mutual writer and editor colleague Walter Rhein (https://walterrhein.substack.com/). After reading some of William’s race-centric pieces\, I knew I wanted to have him on the show! \nDuring our prelivestream Zoom call\, I got to learn that William grew up in Minneapolis\, MN and went to a recently desegregated school. Despite being on the cutting edge of desegregation in MN\, he was largely unaware of that reality and of his blackness. It wasn’t until he attended HBCU Fisk University that he gained a higher level of awareness of his racial classification. But even then race was not central to his college experience or his life. It wasn’t until after college and particularly in the last fifteen years that William made a concerted effort to educate himself. He has been deeply investigating white supremacy and its relationship to his country and his life ever since. \nPresently\, William has a dedication to expose the history of creating slaves via rape as a vehicle for economic mobility for almost a century beginning in the late 1780s. This is a history that has been sanitized across the nation as “natural reproduction” or “natural increase.” We’ll also discuss the racial discrimination facilitated by the United States government in the administration of Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) loans that represent examples of systemic racism responsible for past and present racial wealth gaps. We will also discuss organizing and creating space for race education at a time when our government is actively opposed to such teachings. DESCRIPTION:The next live conversation on race (our hundred-and-twenty-eighfth Conversation Series event) is happening this Tuesday at 7:30pm ET with guest Mark Tichenor! I met Mark in a unique way. Glenn Loury\, the famed economist and a consistent writer/speaker on the subject of race through the years\, has been a guest I’ve long wanted to have on the program. He is very rarely challenged about his beliefs regarding race\, and even when he has indeed been challenged and admitted perhaps some of his thinking is misguided\, his thinking is not adjusted. I want to confront him about that and get some answers from him about a number of race related topics as well as his career writing and speaking about race that has made him a substantial amount of money. \nIn order to capture Glenn’s attention\, I have used Twitter to engage him; I created video reviews where I critique his conversations on race that he has with the same handful of people over and over; and I eventually joined his Patreon and Discord channel as well. I did finally start a private chat on Discord with his “business partner” (Glenn’s description in one of discussions) who seems to be the gatekeeper who determines who can and cannot speak with Glenn. I won’t touch the irony of him having a racialized white man dictating who he speaks to or not. Anyways\, this man said he would speak to Glenn about having a conversation with me\, but then he never got back to me or replied to any of my follow up messages requesting an answer. That was several months ago now. I figured I wouldn’t get any more traction given the way I was ghosted\, but I did end up connecting with Tuesday’s guest Mark via that Discord channel! \nMark\, a career salesman and telecommunications expert\, told me that he is curious about my perspective on race. Despite the hours and hours of video on my YouTube channel that explains in detail what I’m doing and why as well as much of my universe of thought on the subject of race\, Mark has not understood me. Naturally\, I invited him to speak with me about it directly. While Mark had no intention of ever appearing on the show according to him\, our text dialogue and pre-livestream Zoom conference convinced him to give the conversation a try. I’m looking forward to answering his questions\, and I’m looking forward to asking a few of my own. I replied to another one of Eric’s posts inviting him again to the conversation. He agreed to discuss various perspectives on race and on solutions to the problems created by racialization. On a more personal note\, Eric describes himself as having an insatiable curiosity and is a physics/math student aspiring to a physics PhD. DESCRIPTION:Bruce is a racialized white man and mental health professional who joined the Racism Discussion Group and sought out a conversation about racial trauma. He has also been in relationships with women of color\, and he has reflections on those experiences he wants to discuss. My intention is to create safe spaces for people to explore those topics together with me. Luckily\, Bruce attended one of my live events where we had a public conversation on race with a black owned caterer and a black owned winery inside a black owned barbershop. Bruce felt comfortable enough after attending that event to attend some virtual discussions on race. This ultimately led to our 2-hour one-on-one live discussion happening now. During this hundred-and-tenth (yes\, you read that right) Conversation Series event\, we have a returning guest\, Nick Cotter. \nIt has been about three years since Nick Cotter\, a policy analyst for Alleghany county\, was last on The Contraband Wagon. At that time we had a riveting conversation about affordable housing\, poverty\, and gun violence in Pennsylvania\, all of which Nick has personal experience with. We talked about his evolution of race consciousness and why he agrees with Lyndon B. Johnson’s statements:\n“Negro poverty is not white poverty. Many of its causes and many of its cures are the same. But there are differences – deep\, corrosive\, obstinate differences – radiating painful roots into the community and into the family\, and the nature of the individual. These differences are not racial differences. They are solely and simply the consequence of ancient brutality\, past injustice\, and present prejudice.” \nSince our last conversation\, Nick has been working on an extensive gun violence prevention program for an absurd amount of hours a week. I happened to catch him during a weeks-long reprieve\, and why not have the discussion on black-on-black crime that so many trolls on social media suggest antiracist activists are too afraid to have. Nick agreed right away as a racialized white man doing the work in the field. This will be a good one\, y’all.
