Conversation Series 143 – Arturo Dominguez

I’m thrilled to introduce the next guest on The Contraband Wagon, Arturo Dominguez. I was connected to Arturo through his Substack, “Decolonized Journalism.” Arturo’s journalism covers many different kinds of injustice both in America and abroad, so it was no surprise to see his work intersecting frequently with issues of race. During a recent conversation with Arturo and Walter Rhein, Arturo shared valuable insights about attitudes and beliefs on race in the Latino community. For me that was just the tip of a very deep iceberg that I’m excited to explore during our 1-on-1 conversation.
Most of you probably know what I’m about by now, but I’m interested in Arturo’s (and everyone’s) evolution of race consciousness. Arturo is someone who has learned a good deal about the subject of race, so I’m certain our conversation will be rich and deep. We’ll both likely be sharing a heck of a lot of personal and professional stories in addition to the knowledge we’ve gained through study. It will be a heck of a conversation, and I hope to see you there. Bring your questions and comments to the chat!
Below you can find links to several of Arturo’s most popular (controversial?) pieces. Enjoy!
This one from 2020 discusses how white people don’t consider Latinos white, no matter how white we may appear:

Here’s another that caused me some grief. I defended the 1619 Project from Latino criticism:
And one more that caused me some grief because I called out racism in my (the Cuban) community:

Here’s a more recent one talking about the Trump administration’s obvious racism:
